County Looking At Lowering Speed Limit On Gravel Roads
LETHBRIDGE - The County of Lethbridge is looking at reducing the speed on gravel roads
from 80 to 60 km/h.
At their last Council meeting, they gave the bylaw
first reading. A sub-committee will now be set up to explore the issue further
and stakeholders will come in to provide input.
Reeve Lorne Hickey points
out there are a number of reasons for the proposal. He says "the cost of
maintaining our infrastructure at it's current rate is basically unobtainable
and the other fact is there are lots of times when we can't keep up to the
conditions which exist in the county, and thirdly it would reduce the amount of
dust that's in the air during dry seasons, so it's a safety issue as well as an
issue to try and improve the quality of the infrastructure."
He adds "there's been some research done to indicate that by lowering the
speed the infrastructure will survive or have a longer life."
Hickey says it will take some time to research and gather input and he
doesn't know when the bylaw will be back before County Council for second and
