Lethbridge: The third week of Fraud Prevention month focuses on identity theft.
Police
are encouraging the public to shred personal documents that have financial
information, your name, date of birth, or social security number. To ensure
personal documents are disposed of properly, the LRPS will be shredding paper
and electronic documents for free.
"One of the things if the bad guys, we always like to say, get a hold of that
information, like your name, date of birth, and social security number. If they
get a hold of those things they can open up bank accounts, they can open up
mortgages, get a credit card. Once you've got that credit card and those few
other things, you can start just really developing a whole new identity for
someone else." said Constable Blaine Stodolka.
The free-shredding event will be held Saturday, March 23rd from 10 AM-2PM in the AMA parking.
The public is encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for local food
banks.
