Shooting Range Expected to Come Under Fire Tuesday at City Council

LETHBRIDGE: An official business resolution dealing with the Fish and Game Shooting Range will be come before City Council on Tuesday.

Now that there's proof that a bullet left the range and entered a north side home, Councillor Faron Ellis wants the shooting range to be closed until professional security officials can be hired and shut down permanently at that location no later than December 31st, 2016.

Ellis noted that there would be cost considerations should the facility be forced to move, but he didn't hold anything back when commenting on a request from the shooting range that came before Finance Committee earlier this week, for help building a new centre at a new location at a cost of $18-million, "Yes there will be relocation costs, yes I could even see spending some money to help them relocate, but buying them land and building a facility much grander with an indoor range and a club house and other things that they don't even currently have, you know my perspective is this is a form of extortion of the Lethbridge taxpayers."

The request to Finance Committee came with three phases in mind. In the first phase they are looking for $3.5-million towards land acquisition and design costs. Then in 2018 they need $9.6-million for construction of the shooting ranges and $5.1-million dollars in 2022 for an administration building and indoor shooting range.

Ellis says he just needs to convince enough members of Council that the safety of Lethbridge residents is much more important than keeping the facility open, "Lethbridge residents deserve to live in safety and without the fear, they're in their backyards and for that matter in their own homes, of a bullet from that range entering their homes and injuring, possibly killing somebody."
