Global Youth Volunteer Network Heading Abroad In May

LETHBRIDGE - Local teams are heading to Uganda and Thailand this year as part of the Global Youth Volunteer Network.

The organization advocates responsible volunteering and community involvement, and this year will be working closely with a number of different organizations abroad.

In Uganda, the team will work at an orphanage, and assist in the care of children who have been affected by HIV or AIDS. The team will also be partnering with Right to Play, who aims to create a healthy and safe world through the power of sport and play. The team will also be traveling to different locations throughout Uganda and working in various construction and environmental programs.

The group going to Thailand will work with displaced migrant workers and refugees from Burma. They also hope to work closely with an orphanage running summer programs.

This will be the fourth trip for Team Leader Matt Ainsough who says "I think the biggest thing I get out of it is just maybe not taking so much for granted when I get home and using the opportunity to learn more about different problems around the world, but much more than that I get to be able to build relationships with people in Nepal or people in Brazil that I can still stay in contact with."

Global will be holding a silent auction and presentation on Saturday, April 6th at 7:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church (20 Rocky Mountain Boulevard West), and all are welcome!   For more information, please contact matt.ainscough@uleth.ca or visit www.gyvn.ca   You are asked to bring a non-perishable food item.
