Former Finance Minister Discusses Taxation During Lethbridge Visit
LETHBRIDGE - Former Finance Minister Ron Liepert was in Lethbridge on Thursday to discuss
the issue of taxation.
Alberta is the only province in Canada without a provincial sales tax and
Liepert believes now is the time for Albertans to engage in a discussion about
an appropriate level of taxation.
Liepert says the province relies too much on non-renewable resource revenues
to fund all of our day to day expenditures and a consumption tax or revised tax
system would help smooth things over. He says "we go through this every five or
ten years, when resource revenues dip then we're cutting back in our budget and
if we had a more level stream of revenue, that would get away from those humps
He adds we already have a sales tax in Alberta in the form of the GST and
Albertans accept it as part of life.
Liepert was head of several ministries during his time with the provincial
government including Minister of Finance. He held that position until he decided
not to seek re-election in 2012.
