UPDATE: Southern Alberta Power Outages Saturday Night

LETHBRIDGE:  High winds played havoc with power lines around the south on Saturday evening.

Fortis power crews were called out to deal with a downed power line south of Lethbridge which impacted 2500 customers in and around Raymond and Stirling.  The outage happened about 6:00 with power restored by 8:45.

Fort Macleod was also hit by an outage as a result of a substation failure at about 6:50.  The substation belongs to Alta-Link and the outage impacted about 2000 customers in Fort Macleod.  Some of those had power restored by 8:15.  However, Fortis spokesperson Jennifer MacGowan confirmed 1900 of her company’s customers around Fort Macleod were also impacted and had power off for several hours as efforts were made to reroute some lines.

On Sunday morning, Alta-Link spokesman Scott Schreiner confirmed, "During our repairs last (Saturday) night, there were problems with a transformer in the substation that feeds the town (Fort Macleod). In order to be able to restore the power safety we brought in a mobile transformer to allow the town to get connected as quickly as possible, so we had crews on site working on that connection".

The cause of the outage is still under investigation. However, Schreiner says a bird was found in the substation, which could be the original cause.

Fortis reminds anyone who sees downed power lines to stay back from the line and call 24-Hour Emergency Services at 310-WIRE (9473) or 1-855-333-9473
