Finance Committee Gives Tentative Nod To One Major Capital Improvement Project

LETHBRIDGE: City budget debates got started at City Hall on Tuesday.

Finance Committee passed (by a vote of seven to one) a conditional resolution to commit $25-Million from the 2018 Capital Improvement Plan to the redevelopment of Exhibition Park. The condition is based on Exhibition Park, the Province and Federal government coming up with the remaining $66-Million needed for the entire redevelopment project. Also, the source of the $25-million has not been identified and will not come from the $68-million in current C-I-P funding being doled out by the Finance committee. It will be up to the next Council to determine where the $25-Million will come from.

Finance Committee recommended funding be approved to maintain current city assets, such as upgrades to Henderson Pool, Labour Club, Yates Theatre, air conditioning for the ENMAX Centre and park lighting. They also feel that projects that were previously approved should continue to move forward. That includes things like the Regional Police Headquarters Expansion, Crossings Ice Complex, North Regional Park and the renovation at the Bill Kergan Centre.

The decisions made this week are tentative, with full approval by City Council set for later on in June.

It's expected Finance Committee will debate other big ticket items on Wednesday morning, including Leisure Centre options and a new Performing Arts Centre.
