City Council Hears Update On Budget Cuts To Local Post Secondary Institutions

LETHBRIDGE - City Council was updated on Monday about budget cuts affecting both the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College.

In the last provincial budget, their operating budgets were slashed by 7.3 percent.

U of L President Mike Mahon says they've been working through a budget reduction strategy and on Thursday they will present their annual budget to the Board of Governors for approval, which will include the first phase of budget reductions. Mahon says that includes "not replacing a number of professorial positions that happen as a result of an early retirement program, looking at reducing funds for infrastructure maintenance, reducing other kinds of activities, we're reducing some research funds."

Mahon says they've tried to get as close to the total number they have to cut but won't be fully there yet. They will have to run a modest deficit as long as it's approved.

Meantime, College President Dr. Paula Burns says they initially decided to cut the Fashion Design program but have since revised that to allow students who had completed the certificate to finish up the diploma next year.

Burns can't say more program cuts are on the way, but they want to focus on optimizing their program mix depending on employment needs and student demand.
