Extra Police Check Stops and Enforcement in Place for Long Weekend
LETHBRIDGE: The increase in police patrols and check stops that you may have noticed around the city and province this week will continue until Monday.
Sergeant Jim Olsen with Regional Police outlines the top things they'll be focussing on this weekend, "We are insuring that people are using their seatbelts, we're trying to make sure people are not driving while distracted and using their cellphones and doing other things on the roadway when they should be paying attention to driving, and of course we have impaired driving issues that occur over these weekends."
Olsen also noted that when the weather warms up people tend to speed up as well, meaning they will also be cracking down on speeders.
There was one other factor of driving this time of year that Olsen also called attention to, "When you get close to the long weekend people are going out with their vehicles and their trailers and pulling them down the roads. Those people are going a little bit slower than some of the other people, so we need to make sure that we're aware that they are going a little slower, and just be a little more cognitive of their speeds on the roadways."
