LETHBRIDGE: It was a long night Wednesday for city Fire crews who not only helped with flooding situations but, were then called to a house fire just before mid-night.
The fire was in a single family, two-storey structure, in the 300-block of 13th Street South. The Public Safety Communications Centre got a 911 call from a neighbor, who said smoke was seen coming from the house.
There were two people in the home at the time of the fire. One of them suffered minor smoke inhalation while trying to save the family pet. One occupant was taken to the Regional Hospital for treatment and later released. The initial estimated structural and content damage is estimated between around $300,000.
Fire crews were initially able to control the blaze in the basement. However, while crews were still on scene, the fire quickly spread from the room it originated in. Additional crews were called in, as the fire eventually spread up to the home's attic.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
