Tips For Farmers Returning To Their Land After Floods

LETHBRIDGE - As the flood waters recede in most areas of the province, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development have some tips for farmers returning to their land after floods.

Emergency Program Manager Brad Andres says "the first thing they've got to do is make sure that everything is safe to be wandering around the property, so if they had propane tanks or anything like that that could be a hazard, watch out for that, if they can move it safely out of the way or avoid it and mark it off until someone can properly come and deal with it. Make sure it's safe and then do an assessment, have you got damage, what kind of damage, take pictures, take notes."

In terms of animals, Andres says you should make sure they're all there and check their health condition. He adds if they were stuck in a contaminated area, make sure to give them clean feed and water and watch them closely.

Andres says if you contact the local public health office, they can arrange for a water kit where you can take samples and get your water checked.

Pneumonia and diarrhoea are likely to occur in flood affected stock due to stress and exposure to prolonged cold. Andres says that should run through but if producers have got any concerns about their animals health, get ahold of the veterinarian and get them looked at because there may be some more serious contamination.

During cleanup of your farm, if you get any injury including cuts and scrapes, a tetanus immunization should be sought.
