LETHBRIDGE: 26-year old Kelsey Shane Prairie Chicken has been sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter, for the beating death of 47-year old Michael Arthur Powell last year.
After receiving a 911 call, police found the victim dead in a home in the 1200-block of 7th Avenue South July 24th, 2012. He had sustained numerous injuries including extensive head trauma and significant bruising in the rib and kidney areas.
On the evening of July 23rd while two other men were at Powell's home, Prairie Chicken was invited in by one of the men who was visiting. Once inside Prairie Chicken got mad at Powell and accused him of being a pedophile. He then told one of the other men to "mess him up", prompting the individual to strike Powell in the face with a shoe.
The two individuals proceeded to kick and punch Powell, with Prairie Chicken landing a majority of the blows. Prairie Chicken left the residence, but returned a couple more times that night to attack Powell.
Following the series of beatings Powell's neighbour told him that he could spend the night. The neighbour reported seeing Powell lying on the floor at one point overnight, and that he found him in the same spot when he got up the next morning, at which point he called 911.
Prairie Chicken was originally charged with second degree murder and held at the remand centre in Calgary for 12-months. Because he was kept further away from his family and young son, the judge agreed to give him a credit of time and a half served, adding up to 18-months off the six year term.
Co-accused Brandon James Brown returns to court July 26th.
