Demolition Finally Set For Atrium Building

LETHRBIDGE:   The infamous downtown skeleton is coming closer to its demise.

City Council has awarded the tender to demolish the Atrium building to the lowest bidder, Envirocon Environmental Services ULC of North Vancouver. Demolition is to begin in early August and be complete by mid-September.

Total cost of the demolition project is estimated to be $390,000, which includes $304,100 for demolition and $85,900 for associated consulting, engineering and insurance costs. City administration will add those costs to the tax roll of the Atrium property.

According to Mayor Rajko Dodic, “This is an extraordinary step for Council to take, but our community has put up with this eyesore long enough". He concedes, "The assessed value of the Atrium land is $271,000, and so there likely will be a shortfall of approximately $120,000 between the demolition costs and the land value, which may be borne by our taxpayers. The alternative would be to do nothing and leave the Atrium building standing potentially for another 30 years or more.”

A City news release notes, "Construction of the Atrium building began more than 30 years ago but was never completed. The City issued a demolition order last fall after the present owner failed to follow through on plans announced in 2010 to redevelop the property. A January 2, 2013 deadline passed without the owner complying with the Demolition Order. As a result, the City has the authority under the Municipal Government Act to take steps to have the derelict structure demolished and to charge those costs against the property".
