Victim Services Unit Looking for Volunteers

LETHBRIDGE: The Lethbridge Regional Police Victim/Witness Services Unit is holding an information session this week.

They are looking to recruit about 15 crisis support volunteers who are willing to train and eventually be on call.

Unit Manager Darcie James explains how their volunteers help people who have just been the victim of a crime, "We got out right with the police officer and we humanize their feelings and say, 'look we're here to support you, the police will do their investigation but we are here for you at this time of your need.' And it's just overwhelming, we don't expect anything out of that except to be a support for that victim, because it's all about the victim at that time."

James noted that the information session is open to anyone 18 and over, regardless of your employment background. She explained that if you decide to join, you will need to complete an application form, undergo a criminal record, interview and reference checks, hold a valid drivers licence and be willing to commit to the program and job shadowing. One final interview will then be used to decide who they accept.

As for training, James goes over what's involved, "It's mandated for all advocates and crisis support workers in the province of Alberta, they must take their online course. It's 35 modules but it's open book, and we walk them through the process. It's about 70-hours and they have four months to do it." James added that they do also have a couple of mandatory weekend training sessions and guest speakers.

The session gets underway at 7 o'clock Wednesday night at the Regional Police station, located at 135 1st Avenue South.
