NDP Supports Council Position On Oil And Gas Drilling
LETHBRIDGE - The provincial NDP supports Lethbridge City Councils position that oil and
gas drilling activities should not take place within city limits.
Brian Mason is also calling on local MLA's Greg Weadick and Bridget Pastoor to
make their position clear.
Mason believes the regulatory framework for these decisions needs to be
reviewed. He says "one of the things about Alberta that I learned very quickly
is that oil and gas is supreme and the ERCB (Energy Resources Conservation
Board) is more interested in promoting the development of oil and gas than in
protecting property rights or protecting the health of individuals and that's
pretty standard, and that's why I think it's important that the local MLA's
should take a stand here and they should stand up for Lethbridge."
Continuing with the ERCB, Mason adds "they appoint regulators to the senior
positions that come from the industry and it's a very incestuous relationship in
the first place, so we have seen the interest of the oil and gas industry trump
other interests in the province on a regular basis."
The NDP also released documents on Friday showing that the company,
GoldenKey, appears to want to begin its projects in west Lethbridge by March of
