No Charges Laid Relating to School Lock-Down

LETHRBIDGE:    Wednesday afternoon's lock-down of two west side High Schools will Not result in charges being laid.

Just before 2:00-pm, police responded to a report that a male youth, walking with three other boys, was carrying what appeared to be a firearm and entered Catholic Central High West.

Lock-downs were immediately initiated at both Catholic Central and neighbouring Chinook High School and police searched the interior and exterior of the schools. Traffic in and out of the area was also restricted during the search and vehicles were checked.

Officers located a 15-year-old boy who matched the description of the subject in a CCH classroom along with three other 15-year-old boys who were all students at CCH.

Investigation determined that the teen had been carrying a prop gun the group had used during the filming of a movie outside the school. The boys were very cooperative with police and explained they had previously obtained permission from the school to use the prop gun in their school project.

As there was no malicious intent and the boys had previously obtained permission to have the imitation firearm on school property, no charges are warranted.

Police commend staff and students at both schools for their commitment to public safety, quick response and full cooperation throughout the investigation.
