SAPCA Session Covers Right To Die Issue

LETHBRIDGE - The Executive Director of Dying With Dignity Canada was the guest speaker at a SACPA session on Thursday, addressing the topic of the right to die.

Wanda Morris believes it's actually not as controversial as you might think. She says 80 percent of Canadians and 85 percent of Albertans support the right of an individual who's terminally ill and suffering terribly to have assistance to die.

Despite the strong support, it's not legal in Canada yet, but steps are being taken. Morris says there's a constitutional court challenge in BC that may be going to the Supreme Court of Canada and Quebec is working to bring in provincial legislation.

She feels it's really critical to have discussions like this because this is such an issue of public importance. She adds "we are all going to die, hopefully we can die as gently and peacefully as possible and one part of that is being able to have assistance to die if we are facing the prospect of unbearable suffering at end of life."
