LETHBRIDGE: Our city doesn't need a magazine ranking to tell us what we already know -
the University of Lethbridge is a fantastic post secondary institute. However,
it's still great to have the recognition.
The 2014 Macleans annual University Rankings, has the University of
Lethbridge holding onto the third spot in the Primarily Undergraduate
category. The U-of-L first achieved that position for 2013. The local institute
of higher learning, also held onto or improved in 10 of the 13 criteria
Macleans uses in its rankings. There were particular gains in the percentage
of budget it spends on student services and library acquisitions.
Other categories of note, included a second overall ranking in
medical/science grants for faculty, resulting in a third overall ranking of 19
schools in the Primarily Undergraduate classification.
In a news release, University President Mike Mahon is quoted, "We continue to
emerge as a comprehensive research university on the strength of our outstanding
faculty, all the while maintaining our philosophy of being student-centred and
always striving to enhance the student experience".
Mahon also noted that the U-of-L is also becoming a "Destination" University.
More than 70-per cent of the school's student body comes from outside of
southern Alberta, with an increasing number of students attending from outside
of the province.
Numbers from September, show U-of-L enrolment edged up 0.3 per cent since
last year with a total enrolment of 8,311. Also, the university has seen a 16.4%
jump in Graduate program enrolments, which can be attributed to the U-of-L's
move toward a comprehensive research and teaching university. This fall, there
are 533 students enrolled in graduate programs, compared to 458 in the fall of
Among the student population, there has been an 8% increase in international
students (from 447 to 483), who represent 88 different countries.
