Landfill Fire Quickly Brought Under Control

LETHRBIDGE:  ***Up-Date

Fires at landfill sites are not uncommon but, they are always cause for concern, considering the volume of potential fuel.

Fortunately, City fire crews made quick work of a fire at the Lethbridge landfill site Thursday morning and had it contained by 10:00. The facility was re-opened by 11:00.

Landfill staff discovered the fire when they arrived for work first thing in the morning.

The city's waste and recycling specialist says it isn't known what sparked the fire. However, Steve Rozee reminds those who use the site to make sure the contents of fire pits and burning barrels are completely extinguished before the the remains are taken to the landfill.
