LETHBRIDGE - A young Fort Macleod man who brutally murdered his mother with an axe in 2009
will remain in secure custody for the time being.
The man, who can't be
named because he was only 17 at the time of the murder, was initially given
a seven year sentence in September 2010, of four years in secure custody followed by three years
of conditional supervision in the community.
On Wednesday, his case
coordinators recommended he be granted open custody for the remainder of his
custodial sentence, which would include time in a half way house, since he has
exhausted programming opportunities at the Calgary Young Offender Centre and it
would be good for him to have a slow, controlled transition into the
However, the judge decided that the original sentence was fit
and proper and would remain in place for now. Lawyers agreed to meet again on April 30th to review the
final four months of the custody portion.
