Check Stops Set To Resume For Holiday Season

LETHBRIDGE: Holiday check stops will go into effect Wednesday night in both Lethbridge and Coaldale.

Last years campaign resulted in impaired driving charges against seven people. It also turned up eight immediate roadside sanctions, seven suspended drivers, 37 drivers with no operating license, 30 unregistered vehicles, seven uninsured vehicles, 24 Gaming and Liquor violations and 105 provincial statute violations.

Sergeant Russell Lawrence went over how easy it is to avoid an impaired driving conviction, "There are lots of options out there, there's taxis, city transit, Operation Red Nose, phone a friend, pre-arrange designated drivers if you're planning on going out and celebrating."

Lawrence noted that penalties will start kicking in for drivers caught with a blood alcohol concentration over .05. At that point they'll face an immediate three day license suspension and vehicle seizure for a first offence. Anyone with a graduated driver's license who are found with any alcohol will be faced with an immediate 30-day license suspension and seven day vehicle seizure.

As for those charged with impaired driving, they'll have their license suspended until the charge has been dealt with in court. If convicted, drivers will require a mandatory ignition interlock for one year for a first offence, three years the second time and five years on a third conviction. That's in addition to the minimum court imposed fine of $1,000.
