Outside of Politics, Albertans May be More Progressive than Conservative

LETHBRIDGE:  While Alberta tends to have Conservative political tendencies, we have an increasingly liberal attitude toward social issues.

The Citizen Society Research Lab at the College released the findings of a fall public opinion survey on six-controversial subjects. While there are regional differences in opinion, attitudes have remained constant in three areas over the past five-years.

When it comes to abortion, the survey releases states "Albertans strongly support abortion choice remaining a private matter", with 79.7% respondent support (this figure has fluctuated only slightly in the past five years). As well, 61.9% want capital punishment reinstated for first degree murder and 76.9% of those questioned support medical marijuana use.

In the three other subject areas covered by the survey, support has gradually increased. According to the results, "Albertans strongly support legalized doctor-assisted suicide, with that support now at 78.8%, compared to 64.3% support in 2009". Also, support for same-sex marriage has increased from 65.7% in 2009 to 77.3%. 77% agree with same-sex marriage and acceptance of recreational pot use is now at 50.1%, up from 36.5% in 2009.

The survey for this public opinion study was conducted in October of 2013 and included responses from 987 respondents from across the province. A full breakdown of the demographics and the differences in response between the two main cities as compared to other Alberta regions, can be found at the following link:
