Donut Burger, Turkey-tini, Deep Fried Strawberry Shortcake...check out the list here!
This year’s list of tasty treats being served up at the Calgary Stampede Midway is out and, as always, there’s something for even the most eclectic of palates.
“We’ve got some exciting new foods coming our way,” said Stampede spokesman Doug Fraser.
“They’re going to be absolutely phenomenal.”
Topping the list of new and creative foods that will be served to the masses at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth is the artery clogging deep fried Pop Tart, along with a doughnut burger, using a glazed donut as a bun, and the turkeytini — turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce served in a martini glass.
“A lot of them are developed in the United States,” said Fraser.
“There’s a lot of people who are fairly creative with these foods and every year we go looking for new and exciting varieties.”
Also new this year is the colossal onion — cut to look like a flower then breaded and deep fried — a pork chop on a stick, Mac and Cheese pizza, kubie korn balls — slices of kubasa battered and deep fried — 10 different flavours of poutine and a pork tenderloin sandwich.
“Truly, the slab of meat is as big as your head,” said Fraser on the pork tenderloin.
Pretty much anything that fits in a deep fryer will be battered and sold, including dill pickles, Twinkies, Snickers bars, jelly beans, strawberry shortcake and Oreos.
And if you can shove it onto a stick, chances are you’ll find it at the Midway, including chicken–on-a-stick, cheese-on-a-stick, pizza-on-a-stick and, for early-morning Stampede-goers, a Belgian waffle-on-a-stick.
Many of the traditional favourite snacks will also be back, like gourmet pretzel sticks, corn dogs and, of course, the ever-popular mini donuts.
“We’ve still got our basic fare,” said Fraser.
“All the things people come to Stampede for but it’s exciting to bring in these new foods every year.”
This year’s 100th annual Stampede runs July 8 to 17.
