Jorge Vinicio Orantes Sosa Makes His First Court Appearance
Calgary: The man arrested in Lethrbidge Tuesday and accused of war crimes in Guatemala has made his first court appearance in Calgary.
Jorge Vinicio Orantes Sosa had his hands and feet shackled and was escorted by three security officers at his initial extradition hearing. The Sosa family retained Calgary lawyer Alain Hepner on Wednesday night. While Hepner was at the Calgary courthouse Thursday, he told reporters that he needs a week to look at the case. Hepner indicated he would also speak to the Crown and the Attorney General's office. Up to this point, he said he only knew details that he had heard in media reports. For that reason, Sosa is scheduled to return to Calgary court on January 27th.
Hepner said he was surprised at the level of security surrounding Sosa in the court house.
52-year old Sosa has both Canadian and American citizenship and is charged in the U-S with lying to get his American papers. He is also wanted in Guatemala in relation to a massacre of 251 men, women and children in 1982.
When he was picked up in Lethbridge on Tuesday, Sosa was apparently here for less than a day to visit family living on the south-side of the city.
