LETHBRIDGE: The process of installing a new MRI at the Chinook Regional Hospital is now underway.
It's expected to take 10 to 12 weeks to replace the old model, which has been in use for 12-years.
While it's down, a mobile MRI unit has been set up outside the Chinook Regional Hospital, to handle all emergency cases and most of the appointments.
The larger size of the new MRI equipment has created some unique installation challenges. Instead of simply taking it in the front door, several windows have been removed so the unit can go in through the hospital's exterior wall.
The new unit will cost a total of about $2-million dollars, and will allow the Regional Hospital to do new things with the technology. Higher resolution images and multiple contrast images will provide finer detail, while the new MRI will also make exams faster, meaning more people can use it.
