Accused War Criminal Deemed "Flight Risk" After Lethbridge Arrest

CALGARY: An accused Guatemalan war criminal arrested in Lethbridge has been denied bail in a Calgary courtroom.

A judge determined Jorge Sosa, 52, would likely flee if granted bail. Sosa, who has both American and Canadian citizenship, is charged in the U.S. with lying to get his citizenship. He faces extradition to the United States, after he was arrested by Regional Police on January 18th, while visiting relatives in the city.

Sosa is accused of participating in an attack that led to the deaths of 251 men, women and children in a Guatemalan village in 1982.

His next court date is set for April 20.
