Provincial and Local Jobless Numbers Take Differing Dirctions

Lethbridge:    The local unemployment rate crept up slightly in February while the provincial rate was a bright spot. For the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region, the jobless rate tallied 4.5-per cent last month, up from 4.3 in January. The slight increase is not seen as a reason for concern and may be attributed to more people looking for work.

Provincially, Statistics Canada showed 13,700 jobs were created, which helped the rate drop from 5.9  to 5.7-per cent. That rate ties Alberta with Saskatchewan for the second lowest rates in the Country.  Only Manitoba is lower, at 5.3-per cent.  By comparison, Alberta's jobless rate a year ago was at 6.8-per cent.

The National unemployment rate in February was unchanged from January at 7.8-per cent.   Just over 15-thousand jobs were created across the country last month.
