LETHBRIDGE: The city has approved $1 million in support of a bid to host the 2015 Western Canada Summer games.
Lethbridge’s sports bid committee asked council for the funding during a presentation Monday, highlighting the economic benefits – maximum income for minimal investment – as the main selling point. Estimates show the city would receive an impact of about $ 6.6 million for Lethbridge in 2015 as a result of the games.
“It’s not the Olympics, but it’s a very good event for a city of our size to put on,” says committee chair Kevin Kvame.
Onlookers filled the city hall auditorium to watch the debate ahead of the funding vote. They carried signs bearing Lethbridge’s proposed logo for the games, featuring the Western Canada Games torch-shaped logo supported by a yellow circle and two arches that represent features of Lethbridge. Several aldermen noted the community’s obvious enthusiasm was the deciding factor in their decision.
Now the committee is looking ahead to the next step, which involves winning the chance to host a bid tour in Lethbridge.
“We just need to engage the community and get their support out for whatever we determine we’re going to put on the bid tour so that there’s placards and people out there that are enthusiastic to show that we want it here,” says Kvame. “If we can do that, we’re a lock.”
Games organizers will decide in early May if the community is picked for a bid tour. The committee will know by the end of May if Lethbridge is the chosen site to host the games.
