Losses Exceed A Million Dollars In Taber Hog Barn Fire
Taber: The Taber Fire department dealt with a massive fire at a hog operation
four-miles east of the town Thursday night. The initial damage estimate is pegged at $1.3 million.
Eyewitnesses say the blaze may have
started in the attic near a mechanical room of one barn. Taber RCMP do not consider the fire to be suspicious at this time but, an investigation continues.
Taber Fire crews responded about 6:20 with two-fire trucks, 16 firefighters
and Rescue Support. However, because the eight barns at the farm are
adjoined, the fire quickly spread. The Grassy Lake Fire Department sent another
two-trucks and seven firefighters. RCMP and Taber Emergency Medical Services
also responded. Several firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.
Fire crews were able to save three of the barns. Of the five completely
destroyed, three contained hogs. Employees estimate 2000 animals perished. About 1000 pigs were saved.
