Interpol Has Dibs On Guatemala Man Arrested In Lethbridge
Calgary: The plot thickens in the case of a former Guatemala man arrested in Lethbridge in January.
A Spanish court is now seeking the extradition of Jorge Vinicio Orantes Sosa, who is being held in Calgary, suspected of being involved in a 1982 Guatemala massacre in which 251 men, women and children were massacred.
The 53-year-old has been in custody in Canada since January, when he was arrested in Lethbridge on January 18th. He was in this city for less than a day to visit family. Sosa is wanted in the U-S on charges of lying about his role in Guatemala's war when he applied for American citizenship in 2008. The Spanish arrest order was issued Friday via Interpol for crimes against humanity.
An Ottawa-based justice group says Canada should extradite Sosa to Spain or go ahead and prosecute him here. Matt Eisenbrandt of the Canadian Centre for International Justice says Canada should choose the extradition request from Spain as it involves more serious charges. He says the federal government should also consider prosecuting Sosa in Canada.
