City Opposes Surprise Traffic Ticket Fee

LETHBRIDGE: Residents could soon be shouldering a suprise provincial fee on traffic tickets.

Starting April 1st, the province is now charging $15 anytime it assists with an electronic search on tickets for photo radar, redlight camera and parking violations.

The city is opposing the new charge, saying they weren't prepared well enough ahead of time. Mayor Raijko Dodic spoke to Country 95 News about how much the fees could cost the city.

"Red Deer had estimated that their cost was going to be around $1 million. And though we haven't crunched all the numbers in Lethbridge, I suspect that it's going to be an extra cost of $1 million that has to come from somewhere."

Dodic has joined Red Deer and Calgary, who sent letters asking government to overturn or suspend the fees.

Otherwise, city manager Garth Sherwin says they may have to add the $15 fee to the total cost of a ticket.
