LETHBRIDGE: The 2011 Alberta Cup starts Thursday at the Nicholas Sheran Arena.
At the start of March players tried out for the team in their respective Zones. There are eight teams entered in the tournament with 20 players each.
"The practices have been high tempo, all these players are so skilled and the coaches put on really good practices," says South Senators player Jake Dube. "There's so much hype about this it's almost like being in the NHL."
Lethbridge has hosted the tournament twice in the past. It's because of the ties that our city has to Hockey Alberta. This past year the Hockey Alberta Regional Centre was opened Lethbridge. Also many of Hockey Alberta board members have been from Lethbridge.
"When we were looking for a host," says Hockey Alberta Communications Coordinator Mike Dennis, "obviously we were looking for partners that have a strong partnership with Hockey Alberta and we knew that coming down here that Lethbridge would do a fantastic job at hosting this event."
The tournament will see 160 players from all over the province come to Lethbridge. Host Committee Chair Bob Bartlett says "we're one of the best cities to host this tournament and we hope that people along with taking in the sporting event will get out and visit the city of Lethbridge."
