SOUTHERN ALBERTA: With tree branches littering sidewalks and streets all over the city and region following Wednesday night's snowfall, a local arborist has some words of caution.
Maureen Sexsmith-West with Rossco's Tree Service explained that trees under heavy snow can act like a catapult if the wrong limbs are cut off. She noted that you could suffer serious injuries if it happens and you're note prepared. She added that by having a professional do it, they can also take action to minimize damage to the tree.
Another major risk Sexsmith-West acknowledged is power-lines. She stated that you need to avoid any hanging branches that could come into contact with the lines, even ones for your phone or cable. In those cases she says you should call the city, so they can assess the situation and take the proper steps to deal with it.
Sexsmith-West also noted that the trees that have the most issues under heavy snow, are the ones that are already compromised in some way. She explained that you can avoid having to worry about the situations listed above, by simply having tree evaluations done by professionals on an annual basis.
