ALBERTA: The province is putting major support behind 1,792 Alberta based nonprofit and volunteer organizations.
Through the Community Spirit Program for 2010-2011, they're giving out $14.9-million in donation grants. In Lethbridge alone 47 groups will receive $358,000.
The funding is based on the value of donations those groups have already received.
Minister of Culture and Community Spirit Lindsay Blackett explained that it's important for the provincial government to support the groups, which help the less fortunate in our society. He added that the recession made it even more important, as those groups started seeing an increase in the number of people needing their services.
Blackett noted that the Community Spirit Program is already included in the budget for 2011-2012, and he stated that it will likely continue on after that as well.
