Most Alberta Cities See Drop In House Starts So Far This Year -- Not Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE:  Lethbridge is leading the way in our province for new home construction so far this year. Although "starts" were down 10% in May (possibly due to wet weather), year-to-date "starts" in the city are up 29.4% over the same time last year. By comparison, new home starts are down 28% in Calgary, down 24% in Edmonton, down 42% in Red Deer and down 50% in Medicine Hat.

The increase in Lethbridge is due to a dramatic increase in multi-family units. In the first five-months of 2010, 38 multi-family units were built in the city, compared to 186 so far this year.  As for single family units, 175 have been started so far this year and that compares to 241 units in the first five months of last year.
