Local Jobless Rate Increases Slightly But Employment Opportunities Are Increasing

LETHBRIDGE:   The Lethbridge-Medicine Hat jobless rate inched up once again, moving from 6.6% in April to 6.8 last month. That's now the highest rate of any region in the province.  However, it's substantially lower than the 8% rate recorded in May of 2010.

Wet weather has impacted agriculture and construction employment in our area. The CEO for Economic Development Lethbridge points out there are over eight large scale construction projects worth more than $10-million waiting to break ground in Lethbridge.

Cheryl Dick concedes, "While Lethbridge can also be vulnerable during times of government restraint due to the large number of public sector employers, we are also seeing significant hiring activity in food processing and manufacturing".  To underscore that point, Dick noted Maple Leaf Pork held a recruitment event on Wednesday and two more job fairs are planned next week, looking for employees with agricultural experience. She also noted, the Lethbridge and Medicine Hat jobless numbers are lumped together, which can give a distorted view of unemployment in Lethbridge.  Medicine Hat's new home starts were down 50% in May and that city is also seeing a greater impact from fewer energy jobs right now -- both of which impact job creation.

Provincially the jobless rate is down from 5.9% to 5.4%.  On the National scene, Canada's unemployment rate is at its lowest level in more than two years -- falling to 7.4% last month from 7.6% in April, after more than  22-thousand new jobs were created last month.  Most of those job gains were in the self-employment category.
