World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

LETHBRIDGE:  Education and prevention was the goal Wednesday on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The City partnered with the Lethbridge Elder Abuse Response Network to host a display in Park Place Mall to recognize the mistreatment of older adults.

Elder abuse comes in many forms including financial, physical, sexual, psychological or medical abuse. It also includes neglect and violation of human rights.

Past research estimates between 4 to 10 percent of seniors have been abused, however, 22 percent of Canadians in a 2008 survey believe they personally know someone who might be experiencing a form of elder abuse.

Victims of elder abuse and neglect are often isolated from supports in the community. The incidents are often unrecognized and under reported making it very difficult to know the actual number of victims.
