LETHBRIDGE: A local school was one of three in Alberta selected for a special transportation safety award. The Alberta Motor Association awarded Galbraith elementary school with the honour this Tuesday morning. Association reps say they chose the school because of its efforts to make school crosswalks safer.
"Galbraith school has worked really hard over the last year to work together with the school community, apply for grants and really make the school zone a safer place," said Allison Pike, the Alberta Motor Association's school safety patrol regional coordinator. School administrators invested an estimated $80,000 in the project - adding new parking spaces so parents can park and walk their kids into the building, rather than pulling up and idling out front.
Pike says the safety efforts also help the environment. "By doing the initiatives that they are doing it's definitely cutting back on idling and helping to reduce air pollution," she said.
