LETHBRIDGE: A 22-year old city man charged with the theft of merchandise from a local jewelry store now has a warrant for his arrrest.
The Regional Police Priority Crimes Unit were called in late last year when $75,000 worth of jewelry and loose diamonds were discovered missing from the Charm Diamond Centre, in the 500-block of 1st Avenue South. The thefts occurred between November of 2010 and early January 2011.
Police say the accused, Juan Jose Calero-Perez, allegedly sold a majority of the items to a downtown pawn shop. Some of the stolen jewelry was recovered when Calero-Perez was arrested at his home in mid January. He was charged with theft over $5,000 and released on bail.
Calero-Perez has had several court dates since January, with the case being set-over on each date. He was sent a letter stating he was to appear in court Thursday but failed to attend, forcing the court to issue a warrant for his arrest.
