SOUTHERN ALBERTA: A Mexican suspect connected with an alleged murder in Shaughnessy last October is expected to appear at a Calgary airport Tuesday. Luis Alfonso Ochoa-Gamez, 29, had fled Canada and was later arrested on immigration violations when he tried to cross into Mexico from the U.S. He's now being extradited to Canada to face a charge of second degree murder.
The extradition comes after months of intense RCMP investigation following a mysterious death outside of Lethbridge. Picture Butte RCMP found the body of 24-year-old Mauro Hernandez-Renteria outside a home in Shaughnessy in the early morning hours of October 13th. Three other people were allegedly also found in the residence at the time. Mounties suggest Hernandez-Renteria, who is also from Mexico, was fatally shot because of a drug dispute.
The suspect is scheduled to arrive at the Calgary airport at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday via RCMP aircraft. He will stay in custody until a hearing within 24 hours of his return.
