LETHBRIDGE: The City is cracking down on half-built construction projects. Staff will be calling property owners connected to a list of unsightly premises - urging them to finish or they could face demolition. After that first step, the City now has the power to order them to complete or to demolish buildings that aren't done by a certain deadline.
But Mayor Raijko Dodic adds action like that is a last resort. "We don't want to get to that point. We want people to finish their properties. It's just that we've been getting emails and phone calls from people - some of whom are quite rightly irate," said Dodic. One resident sent him a picture of her daughter who was a very young child when one house was first abandoned, and the child is now a young adult.
"In the grand scheme of things it's not a lot," said Dodic. "But if you have to live beside it all the time, you may be worried about how it's affecting your property values and we're trying to address that." About 15 residential and a half dozen commercial properties are on the City's official list of unsightly, unsafe or unfinished properties.
