Alberta Teen Smoking Rates Climb Despite Falling Numbers Across the Country
ALBERTA: Across the country recent smoking trends are looking good, with the national rate falling to a new low of 17-per cent.
Unfortunately Alberta teens are going in the opposite direction, jumping from 12-per cent in 2009 to 17-per cent in 2010.
Les Hagen with Action on Smoking and Health noted that the affordability of tobacco products in Alberta is the number one issue. He added that wages are also fairly high in the province when compared to the rest of the country, making cigarettes even more affordable.
Another major issue Hagen brought up is legislation in the province. He explained that Alberta is the only province in the country without its own legislation, preventing them from implementing harsher penalties against vendors who sell tobacco products to minors.
Hagen stated that until the provincial government is willing to take the steps necessary to fight smoking among youth, last years numbers could turn into a trend.
