Womanspace Chair Tapped To Represent NDP In Next Provincial Election

LETHBRIDGE:  The provincial NDP officially has a candidate to run in Lethbridge West during the next election, which could come as soon as October or early in the New Year.

Shannon Phillips got most of the votes Sunday afternoon to win the nomination, as over 150 New Democrats gathered to select their representative. Phillips was up against James Moore who ran for the NDP in 2008.

Phillips is well-known as Chair of the Board of Directors for Lethbridge's Womanspace Resource Centre and during recent funding cutbacks, made sure the Womanspace financial literacy programs for low-income women were maintained. However, Phillips also works for the Alberta Federation of Labour as a researcher and policy analyst. She worked closely with former federal NDP Leader Jack Layton, during his visits to Alberta.

In an interview with Phillips in late August, she told Country 95 News that she was the first federal party organizer Jack Layton put in place in Alberta after he became leader.

Phillips worked closely with Layton when he visited this province and said, "Layton even made an impact on Alberta's federal Conservative stranglehold.  She recounts how in 2003-2004, "We were nowhere in Alberta and now we have a seat here -- the only non Conservative seat in Alberta is a New Democrat seat -- and the reason for that is, in large part, because Jack made it a priority".  Phillips noted, that, "Layton was able to make that impact by using people as building blocks and putting them in strategic positions to increase the party's profile.  She hopes to continue in that direction.
