Blue Liberals Ready to Take on Red Tories

LETHBRIDGE: The head of Alberta's Liberals says his fiscally conservative policies are what will make his party stand out from Alison Redford's new "red" Conservatives. Dr. Raj Sherman told reporters on a visit to Lethbridge Wednesday his focus will include more support for small and medium business owners, stronger health care and better value for oil sands money.

I'm a very blue Liberal,” he laughed. “That's what's interesting about politics. I was a compassionate Conservative, I am a strong fiscal conservative. And the backbone of this province is the fact that we care for one another and are compassionate.”

Sherman had a quick one-day tour in the city, partly to participate in the nomination of Lethbridge West Liberal Bal Boora, who was expected to be nominated Wednesday night. It was Sherman's fifth visit to the area this year, devoted to meetings with the local business community and elected officials.

During an availability with local media, he paused his talk of prep plans for an expected election race to take a moment and recognize the significance of the players this time around. “It's fantastic. We have two very bright women who are leaders of two parties and I've probably got a better suntan than anybody else as a leader. It's good,” he said. “We reflect the diversity of this province – this province has changed.”
