September Unemployment Numbers Take A Dip

LETHBRIDGE:  Positive jobless numbers were spread over several fronts.

For the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region, the rate dipped to 5.8% from 6% in August.

Cheryl Dick, CEO, Economic Development Lethbridge, expects employment levels to remain stable in our region through the end of the year, as hiring continues in the manufacturing sector. Dick noted, "Agriculture related jobs were particularly strong during harvest, which also benefits the transportation sector".  She also stated, " It was Transportation and Warehousing that produced 5,400 jobs in September, making it the highest employment growth sector".

Provincially, the jobless rate is down to 5.4% from 5.6%.  Only Saskatchewan has a lower rate at 4.6%.

On the national level, 61,000 new jobs were created last month, pushing the unemployment rate to a near three-year low of 7.1%,  down from 7.3.
