More Provincial Money But, Increased Enrollment Still Leaves City Public Schools Pinched

LETHBRIDGE:  A Public school board budget update includes positive elements and disappointments. However, there is also hope that the provincial government will stick to a commitment.

At it's regular meeting on Tuesday, Public School trustees gave the nod to a 2011 audited financial statement and up-dated 2011-2012 budget.  The document noted the added funding from Alberta Education in October.and student enrollment to the end of September was up by 147-students.

There was total revenue of $92.6-million and expenses of $93-million, with the deficit of just over $400,000 to come from school reserves.

The extra provincial funding allowed the district to add  13.9 full time equivalent teachers and 10-full time support staff.  However,  the district still has about 12 fewer teachers and 15 fewer support staff positions than last year, despite increased student enrollment.

The Board has placed high hopes on the three-year funding commitment that was outlined in Premier Alison Redford's Mandate letter to the Education Minister, after the provincial cabinet was announced in October.

The Board of Trustees also outlined its 5th annual Town Hall meeting which will be held Monday, February 6th, 2012, to set goals for the next year. The Board wants to get feedback on "What specific activities can trustees be involved in to best engage the community in order to receive feedback or suggestions". An open invitation to the town hall meeting will go out in January.
