LETHBRIDGE: The first federal NDP leadership candidate to visit southern Alberta came to Lethbridge Friday. Romeo Saganash is the NDP MP for Abitibi, James Bay, Nunavik and Eeyou.
He says with the northern regions of the country rising in economic and political importance, it's important to have someone who understands the issues there at the helm of the federal NDP party. And he thinks the success he's had working within his own constituency is transferable to all of Canada.
"What I've done in northern Quebec, for that region has worked very well. Just consider the northern Quebec Cree and the northern Ontario Cree and look at the difference there," he told Country 95 News Friday during his visit. "My track record is there, that experience is unique. And what I've achieved in the last 25 years in my region, is something I want to do for the rest of the country."
A lawyer, advocate and environmentalist, he says he wants to create more economic opportunities for people in remote communities. Saganash is a law school graduate who has worked with the UN and various aboriginal economic development projects. A residential school survivor from the small northern community of Waswanipi, Quebec he speaks both official languages, as well as Cree and Spanish.
