LETHBRIDGE: The city scored top marks in a nationwide beauty pageant - of a sort.
A report released Tuesday shows the Communities in Bloom program gave the city "five blooms" in 2011, the highest ranking a city can get, for its performance in eight different categories. The city got high marks from a panel of judges that visited during the summer in categories like "heritage conservation," "environmental action" and "floral displays."
"The most important thing is that it recognizes the collective effort across the community to keep Lethbridge a great place to live, and that's something we should all be proud of," said Dave Ellis, who manages the parks division for the City of Lethbridge and also helps organize the Communities in Bloom effort.
The panel gave Lethbridge special mention for its urban forestry efforts, through which 38,000 trees are cared for throughout the community. The city has been evaluated by the Communities in Bloom project almost every year since 1985.
