LETHBRIDGE: Some competition could be on the way for Lethbridge-East MLA Bridget Pastoor, who officially filed papers Wednesday to seek the PC nomination in her riding.
Nomination chair Cameron MacLennan confirms County of Lethbridge reeve Lorne Hickey has taken out papers to run against her, though he hasn't filed his completed papers yet. Pastoor says if he does, she'll welcome the contest.
"When I first got elected as alderman there were 35 people running and I thought that was healthy," she said. She called the prospect of a race for the nomination "exciting," saying she's glad premier Alison Redford didn't just make her crossover from the Liberals automatic. "It's democracy. It's the way democracy should be practiced."
MacLennan says potential candidates have until next Monday at noon to file officially, though so far no one else has shown interest. If there is a vote, an advanced poll will be held Thursday, January 19. The nomination meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 26.
