Latest Federal Budget Expects To Eliminate Deficit By 2015
OTTAWA - Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty introduced a stay-the-course budget on
Thursday that pledges to eliminate the deficit by 2015.
He says the deficit for the current fiscal year is projected to be $25.9
billion, but will become an $800-million surplus by 2015-16.
MP for Macleod and Minister of State for Finance Ted Menzies feels one of the
budget highlights is a new Canada Job Grant that will focus on skills training
to help employers find the workers they need. Menzies says "the fundamentals of
this whole budget, you'll see the pattern, it's basically the plan that we've
been working on, creating jobs, making sure that we can grow the economy for the
long term prosperity of the country."
As far as funding for agriculture, Menzies says the refunding of the Growing
Forward 2 program will be a big benefit for the agriculture sector. As well, he
says "the capital gains maximum for a farm or small business was at $750,000 and
we're moving that up to $800,000 and we're indexing it going forward, so that
will help with the transition of many farms from father to son or father to
daughter."
The government plans to cut travel expenses by encouraging greater use of
teleconferences and other ways of holding meetings over long distances. They
will also look to reduce massive printing costs by publishing more documents
